Genuine Montecristo little cigars, produced only in Cuba and nowhere else, are rightfully included in the island’s tobacco industry elite and are an integral part of its history.
There are two main versions of the origin of the name of these Cuban cigars. According to one of them, the idea to name cigars Montecristo comes from the world famous adventure novel by Alexandre Dumas. It was this novel that was most often read to cigar lovers, who listened to each new chapter and listened with pleasure over and over again, while spinning magnificent cigars. And in gratitude for this, the name of the mysterious count became the name of Montecristo little cigars.
But there is also another version. According to her, the founder of the brand Alonso Mendes, an enterprising American who came to the island in 1930, was very fond of relaxing in the mountains, in Spanish monte. And the favorite wine of Mendes and his wife was Laсrima Cristi – “Tears of Christ”. And it is precisely the wine drunk in the mountains that is combined into this original name for cigars. Researchers believe that this version is more like the truth. As evidence, they argue that attributes such as swords appeared much later in the form of an emblem on whist and cigar bows.
The founder of the factory was not only a businesslike and successful man, but also an experienced one – even before moving to Cuba, he already had his own plantations and a cigar factory in Florida in American Florida. The combination of all these qualities and skills allowed Mendes to conquer a significant share of the Cuban cigar export market in record time, and a little later to become a leader at all. This magnificent Montecristo little cigars brand is among the leaders today, successfully competing both with eminent “colleagues” with a long history, and with new players in the cigar business.
